Yesterday we had a call from Samuel C. PRICE of Havelock (Kings Co.) age 71. Mr. Price's grandfather, George Webb PRICE, came to New Brunswick in 1769 from New Jersey before the breaking out of the American war. His grandmother came from New York state with the Loyalists in 1783 and he has been informed that when she landed in Saint John there was but one frame building here, although there were several shanties. Her maiden name was Rachel FORD and her father had charge of the year's clothing provisions etc. allowed his company by the British Government. Mr. George Webb settled at the 'Mistake' on the St. John river and died there.; his widow and her son, George Webb Price, father of Samuel C. Price, removing from The Mistake to Canaan (near the centre of the present settlement). Samuel C. Price's brother, Edmund PRICE was the first white child born on Butternut Ridge. Samuel C. Price was born in Canaan and when he was two years old, his father's family removed to Butternut Ridge. He distinctly remembers events when he was three years old, one of which was stealing by the Indians of two children from George KEITH. These children, both girls, remained with the Indians, married and had families. They were discovered after they had grown up, and one of them was taken home to her family, but she would not stay with them. The children had been carried to Richibucto by the Indians.
