E. Stone Wiggins, author of the 1876 essay "History of Queens County,
NB" writes that George Webb Price was a loyalist and captain in the
militia and that he came to Saint John in 1783. However, Amos, Keith
and Perry in their "The Descendants of Edmund Price and Jane Webb"
(1976) suggest that the Prices were pre-loyalists, coming in 1763.http://automatedgenealogy.com/gen/showIndi?id=24&label=@I278@

The Parish of Havelock - About the year 1769, Geo. W. PRICE came from New Jersey, U.S.A. and settled a short distance up the St. John River, where he remained until 1793. During that time he married at Miss FORD, daughter of Capt. FORD who was a loyalist and a distinguished officer in the war. During Mr. Price's residence in this part of the province he suffered all the trials and privations occasioned by his early settlement. On one occasion he was taken prisoner by the Indians. They appeared to have no evil intent for after keeping him a short time they let him go. In 1793 Mr. Price moved up to Canaan (Queens Co.). He was accompanied by one O'BRIEN. They were the first settlers in that part of the county. The journey from above St. John was maade in boats. Mr. Price was soon followed by other settlers. Somewhere about the year 1760, Daniel KEITH, a native of Dublin, Ireland, came to America and finally settled in the state of New York. In 1783 he came to what was then known as Parrtown and shortly afterward settled up the river at a place known among early settlers as 'The Mistake'. He wedded Miss Elizabeth DESBROW (cross reference: DISBROW) and in 1793 followed Mr. Price to Canaan. After 37 years spent in conflict with the stubborn soil, Mr. Keith passed quietly away. In 1796, Melanthon THORNE, his wife and father-in-law came to Canaan. Mr. Thorne was probably the fourth settler in that place. He was a native of Brooklyn, New York and came to St. John in 1784. He was a loyalist and took an active part in the war. He settled up the Nerepis where he remained about 12 years. He married a Miss Butler daughter of Michael BUTLER, and uncle of Gen. Benj. BUTLER, by whom he had one son, Richard THORNE, who was 16 years of age when he came to Canaan with his father. Together, father and son cleared a little spot of land on which to erect their log cabin, but gradually by that industry and determination which alone characterized those early settlers, they became master of nature and green fields smiled on every hand. Canaan is situated about six miles from Havelock and the sons of these old settlers gradually made their way further east and in the year 1812 James KEITH and George PRICE settled in this part of Kings County. Mr. Keith came first and took up two or three hundred acres of land which was thickly wooded with maples. About the first of March, Mr. Keith built a camp and commenced the manufacture of maple sugar on a small scale. A few weeks later Mrs. Keith was brought over on a handsled drawn by her boys. They lived for some time in the sugar camp. Mr. Keith had married a Miss Price while a resident of Canan. In order to get the knot tied, Mr. Keith and his prospective bride, accompanied by the bridesmaid and the best man came from Canaan to Petitcodiac via what is now Havelock on horseback. The road was a path through the woods, a tree here and there was blazed so the traveller would not lose his way. Upon arriving at Petitcodiac, the would be groom soon hunted up the only clergyman, a Mr. SCOTT who speedily performed the impressive ceremony. The house where the bridal party put up at was small and beds were scarce, so the whole party spent the night on the floor. Daniel Keith was the father of fourteen children, twelve sons and two daughters. One one occasion he and his twelve sons mowed together. The old gentleman came first followed by his eldest son, and so on down, the youngest bringing up the rear. Mr. Keith was soon followed by another gentleman from Canaan. Only a few months later Geo. Price settled in this vicinity. In 1815 Mr. Price erected a small saw and grist mill which was the first in that parish. He was also the father of fourteen children. Of course these settlers were deprived of all that now makes life worth living. They were couped up in log houses which would not be used in this age for hog houses. As near as can be ascertained the first frame house was erected about 1816. The first school house erected in this naeighborhood was not at all a handsome structure. It was built of logs and was about seventeen feet square. Mr. DONLEY, the first teacher, was one of the gentlemen who believed the fundamental principal of school teaching consisted in thoroughly understanding how to wield a birch stick to the best advantage. It was not until 1825 that the first place of worship was built. It was a very small structure but 'well fixed' for those days. Prior to that date preaching service was held in private houses. Rev. Messrs. Crandall and Lewis were the first clergymen. When first settled by white men, Indians were quite numerous and although generally well disposed, perpetuated in the spring of 1816 a foul deed. It seems that two daughters, aged respectively 9 and 11 years, of James Keith, were out to drive the cows across the road, a short distance from their home. As they did not return in due time a search was instituted, but the children were never found. Mr. Keith searched far and near, and in company he went up north and spent some time among the Indians, but found no clue to the whereabouts of his missing children. 25 or 30 years afterward, so says the villagers, an old woman made her appearance among them and declared she was one of the missing children, and that she and her sister had been stolen by the Indians and taken up north. She even asserted that she saw her father when he came up north, but so closely was she guarded that she dare not cry ot or make a sign. It was in vain that her friends entreated her to remain with them. She would not stay. In the long separation from the friends of her childhood, the love for her native place and past associates had gradually given place to remain with her dusky friends of the forest. A number of inhabitants declared that the above story is a simple fabrication and that the girls were lost, but the latter story can hardly be supported.
